Background: Massive forces of police today (Thursday) fired tear gas grenades in renewed violent clashes with rioters in the strife-torn Italian city of Reggio Calabria. The people of the city are demanding its introduction as capital of the new region of Calabria.

In clashes overnight rioters threw missiles and petrol bombs at police columns. Several policemen have been injured, some critically.

The city is also in the grips of a general strike, called to reinforce Reggio Calabria's claim to be regional capital. Barricades set up by people of the town several days ago, remain, and there have been frequent cases of arson.

In Rome an emergency parliamentary committee meeting has been called to consider Reggio Calabria's claim and the disturbances that have all but closed the town off from the remainder of Italy. Parliament has been charged with settling the dispute as quickly as possible.
