Background: Parisians awoke Nov 23 to some startling news: some cafes are to close by Government decree. The cafes the Government intends to close are mostly near barracks, schools, cemeteries, hospitals and factories.
In France where there are 173 inhabitants to every one cafe, wine drinking is a national pass time. It is also a killer: over 22,000 people died of alcohol poisoning last year.
While the Government intends to help boost the virtues of soft drinks, new measures in the campaign against alcohol include the suppression of publicity for alcoholic drinks in public places - particularly at sports meeting, a move likely to affect the big aperitive advertisement that decorate the route of the French marathon cycle race Tour de France.
