Background: Motorcycling has been a popular sport in Yugoslavia for half a century, and this year enthusiasts throughout the country are celebrating the fiftieth anniversary with a number of events at various venues around the country.

SYNOPSIS: One such event was the international motor-cross competition held near the little Alpine town to Trzic on Sunday. It attracted a large crowd of about ten thousand spectators, and in the two main races of the day, they were able to enjoy some superb competitive riding with Austrian, Sigfried lerner, setting the pace.

For this, the first race, the hilly course was in good condition, having been dried out by the hot summer sunshine. But later towards the end of the second race, a sudden shower turned it into a mud track.

Early speeds were fast and machinery was pushed to the limit. Some bikes were pushed too far, and then could not make it on the hills. This first leg was won by Lerner.

At the start of the second race, he was obviously the favourite to win the competition on aggregate. In the first race, the runner-up was Michael Weiss, and third was Walter Leitgeb - both Austrians. But in this race the Austrians only captured the first two places.

There were twelve countries taking part - Yugoslavia, Austria, Belgium, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Hungary, Romania, the Soviet Union, Switzerland, Sweden, West Germany, and England. The Austrians were dominant with Lerner first, Weiss second - making Lerner overall winner on aggregate.
