Background: National and world wrestling champions appeared in the third match between Soviet and American teams staged Wednesday (March 22) as part of the current Soviet ten-day tour sponsored by the United States Wrestling Federation. Badly beaten in the first two matches the American team closed the gap at kent State University - finally losing by 4 1/2 bouts to 5 1/2.

Wrestlers included former world champion and Olympic Silver medallist Rick Sanders. (for USA) three times world champion Azgalav Abdulbeakov from the soviet Union, and American former world champion Wayne Wells.

The final meet is scheduled for New York this weekend.

SYNOPSIS: At Kent State University in Ohio on Wednesday Soviet wrestlers beat an American team for the third time running. But they had a harder job doing it than in the earlier matches.

Former world champion and Olympic Silver medallist Rick Sanders - in black - beat Vladimir Cerkov of the Soviet Union convincingly in a one-hundred-and-twenty-five-and-a-half pound bout.

It was one of three American wins in the ten-bout programme...

Three-time world champion Azgalaz Abdulbeakov, of the Soviet Union, had to struggle for a close decision over national champion Tom Milkovic. In a previous meet the Soviet wrestler had won easily.

Midway through the programme the United States took the lead when former world champion Wayne wells, from Oklahoma state, used strength and speed to beat Nodar Hrodash Willy, and Scott Wicker gained a victory through forfeit in the one-hundred-and-sixty-three pound class. But the Soviets rallied to take a one-point lead into the final, heavyweight match....
At four-hundred pounds American Chris Taylor had a 150-pound advantage over 20-year-old Nodor Moromozay, but it was stand-up wrestling all the way, and the bout ended in a draw. The Soviet team finished the evening with a five-and -a-half to four-and-a-half victory.
