Background: The river trade between Chad and Cameroon has received a much needed boost through a recent gift from France. This ferryboat, given to Chad by the French government, will replace its antiquated predecessor in the transport of goods and passengers along and across the river Chari, one of the country's main trading routes from the capital Ndjamena. The French contribution to Chad's reconstruction and development follows a report on the country's ailing economy presented to a United Nations conference last November. Chad is generally considered to be the world's poorest nation.
