Background: The one-man commission of inquiry set up by the Uganda Government to investigate the disappearance of British diplomat Brian Lea is continuing in Kampala.

Justice Russell, who is conducting the inquiry, is hearing evidence surrounding Mr Lea's disappearance in the first week of May.

Mr. Lea, a 49-year-old consular official, has said he was kidnapped on May 2 and held for three days in an island hut with his leg tied to a boulder. The Uganda government denied he was kidnapped, and set up the inquiry commission. Fishermen have testified to the commission that Mr Lea visited the island with Indian lawyer Basil Rao, and British Asians Mr. P.V. Gosai and Shafique Ahmed. The fishermen say they were asked to build a hut and Lea and the three men returned on May 2.

Exhibited in the courtroom were a blanket and other items found in the hut.

Earlier, doctors had testified that the diplomat bore marks consistent with his statement that he had been tied up.

The commission has heard 49 witnesses since the hearing began on may 18. Evidence from those involved is expected to continue for about another week.
