Background: Teams of United Nations peacekeeping troops continued to fly from Cyprus to Cairo on Saturday (27th October). Close to a thousand were expected to have arrived by the end of the day.

The United Nations Secretary General, Dr. Kurt Waldheim has said that a force of 7,000 will be needed to police the Middle East ceasefire properly.

In Syria the ceasefire with Israel has left the Israelis in control of more Syrian territory than they gained in the 1967 war.

The Observers stationed at the 1967 ceasefire in the Golan Heights during the fighting, have now moved into Syria itself. There they are establishing new vantage points. Until new outposts are built, the observers will operate by car, moving from one point to another.

On Friday (26th October), the observers consulted the Israelis on exactly where their froward positions are on the front. U.N. teams are also on the Syrian side of the front and on the Egyptian/Israeli front to the south.
