Background: Leipzig's annual Autumn Trade Fair opened yesterday (5 September) with 6,500 exhibitors from 55 countries displaying their wares. The Autumn Fair, this year almost as big as the Spring Fair, retains its former emphasis on consumer goods, but this year combines a new stress on industrial equipment, especially in chemicals.

East German leaders, headed by Party chief Erich Honecker and Prime Minister Willi Stoph, toured the stands immediately after the opening.

SYNOPSIS: In East Germany, the Leipzig Autumn Trade Fair opened on Sunday with displays from 6,500 exhibitors in 55 countries. A group of East German leaders, headed by Party chief Erich Honecker and Prime Minister Willi Stoph, toured the stands shortly after the official opening.

This year the Autumn Fair is almost as big as the Spring Fair, which has long been a major meeting-point for traders from east and west.

The Fair highlights sea as well as land travel: the maritime displays range from this advanced lifeboat, capable of rescuing 50 people, to models of container ships and fishing factory vessels.

Nearly four-fifths of the display space is reserved for East Germany's own products, though foreign participation has increased ten per cent; East Germany's Wartburg cars are prominently displayed.

A glittering display of motorcycles completes the show of consumer goods, which have long been a particular strength of the Autumn Fair in Leipzig, which has doubled in size in the last five years.

The growth of the Fair is partly due to the increasing emphasis now being placed on engineering and other manufacturing trades. Exhibits from chemical industries and a special feature this year.

Japan with a gasoline display as well as the inevitable motorcycles, has taken five times more space than last year, in this growing market-place of the world's manufacturers.
