    Background: KABUL, AFGHANISTAN

In Kabul, several people died and at least 12 others were injured in three recent bomb explosions. One of the blasts occurred in a busy shopping centre of the Afghan capital and caused extensive damage to buildings. The Soviet Army daily newspaper, Krasnaya Zvezda, said the bomb was detonated in the early morning when the area was busy with shoppers. The authorities blamed anti-government Mujahideen guerillas for the explosion. They said the bomb had been planted to cause the maximum damage and injury to ordinary citizens in an attempt to create anti-Soviet feeling among the population. The Soviet Union moved into Afghanistan in December 1979 to support the government of Babrak Karmal and now has an estimated 100,000 troops in the country. A leaflet campaign was recently conducted in Kabul, calling for a general strike to protest at the presence of Soviet troops in Afghanistan.
