Background: Liberia's leader Master Sergeant Samuel Doe had a one-hour meeting with Tanzanian President Julius Nyerere on Monday night (25 August). The visit is part of Sergeant Doe's campaign to improve his government's image in Africa.

SYNOPSIS: The Liberian Head of State's call on Dr. Nyerere was unofficial and at his own request. President Nyerere is an influential member of the Organisation of African Unity, many of whose members were alienated by the executions during the after Sergeant Doe's coup last April. Sergeant Doe was welcomed by Tanzania's vice-President Aboud Jumbe.

Sergeant Doe later had talks with Dr. Nyerere for an hour. The Tanzanians did not issue any comment on the discussions, but diplomats believe the fact that Dr. Nyerere agreed to see Sergeant Doe would itself be an important boost to Liberian morale. Later Sergeant Doe left to continue his African tour with a state visit to Ethiopia.
