Background: The largest-ever Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Sow was opened on Saturday (8 August) by President Kenneth Kaunda. The show is the premier event of its kind on the Zambian calendar.
More than 70 commercial organisations from all area of Zambia were represented at the 3-day Show.
In a long opening speech the President made a strong appeal to Zambian farmers to grow more maize, cotton, and tobacco....the country's three main crops. Their production has fallen drastically in the past two seasons. Singling out tobacco as an example of poor crop production, President Kaunds urged greater effort from farmers and called for the preparation of seed beds which, after planting out, would be capable of yielding a 20 million pounds (weight)... 9 million kilos...crop.
He added that individual farmers and co-operatives could not expect the Government to plough their fields, to plant their crops, or raise their stock. That was for them to do. After opening the shoe, President Kaunda made a quick tour of the exhibits.
