Background: Along the shore, close to Pohang Naval Port in South Korea, shells exploded, artillery pieces boomed out, small arms fire pierced the air and troops ran ashore from landing vessels. The invasion was on. F-100 jets swooped low supporting the ground forces pouring shells of death upon an imaginary enemy. So began Operation 'Happy Lion'.

South Korean troops took party in this mock invasion on Pohang using their most modern equipment supplied by the United States.

Before the exercise a model of Pohang was used to prepare for the landing with scale models of landing craft and warships. The attack started with a bombardment of the shore establishments and was followed by Marines and infantrymen going ashore with fighter plane support. The officers commanding the invasion were entirely satisfied with the ability of their troops to effect such a landing in wartime on enemy territory.
