Background: Visnews filmed Feb. 8 the first US-Thai-Tactical exercise in a mock nuclear attack to test part of SEATO's defence system.

The exercise was code-named "Kitisena" (meaning "Famous Warrior") after Thailand's Assistant Commander in chief and former Prime Minister. Observers from other SEATO countries watched the exercise.

The headquarters element of the U.S. Army's 25th Brigade Task Force came from Hawaii to partake in the exercise, led by Brigadier General Curtis Herrick.

Participating officers were briefed by American and Thai officers. The exercise being tactical in nature, no troops were deployed, and "simulated" atomic situations were used to give training in communications and co-ordination to staff officers.

No nuclear weapons were used, and the situations planned took place only on the maps and plotting boards of the commanders.

Mountainous Lambang with its teak woodlands was chosen for the exercise apparently for its proximity to Communist North Vietnam and China.

The Buddhist pagodas - a landmark in every Thai city and the abode of yellow saffroned monks provided a contrast to the army uniforms and discussions on atomic warfare.

During the exercise the brigade task force head quarters was visited by Prince Chula of the Thai Royal Family.
