Background: As Muscovites shivered in temperatures well below zero - and gales lashed shipping off Europe's coastline heralding an icy winter -- ski-ing enthusiasts had their first taste of winter sports at Zugspitze, West Germany, December 6.

A good fall of snow had covered Zugspitze, Germany's highest mountain, as sportsmen donned their skis to enjoy the first races of the season.

For spectators it was an invigorating outing - for many sportsmen a day of spills as they toned up after the long summer.

Bright sunshine glistening on the snow provided the perfect Christmas-card effect. A reminder that Christmas too is nearly here.
