Background: Recently there were some 30,000 pigeons in Hamburg. With this large pigeon population the city's buildings became badly soiled.The citizens of Hamburg decided to destroy half of the birds - unfortunately there was no Pied Piper, as in Hamlin, to get rid of the nuisance. After long arguments with the local society for the protection of animals it was decided that hydrocyanic acid should be used.

Every dawn destruction groups reduce the number of living pigeons. They entice the birds out of their nesting places and given them normal grain fodder. The birds are then given poisoned grains. Seconds after eating them the birds fall over and die. The dead bodies are then collected for disposal and put on a trailer. About 300 to 400 birds are killed each day by this method. Ornithologists have found that pigeons suffer from degeneration diseases, and thus also threaten the city's hygiene
