Background: As a warm-up before the world gymnastic's championships in Yugoslavia, the British gymnastics team challenged the USA to a two-day match in London. The last time the two teams met was in 1962 when the British were narrowly beaten. Highlights of the first day of the match on Thursday (15 October) at the Chrystal Palace, London, were set exercises on the apparatus.

Over the last few years the American have made great progress in gymnastics. The American teams, both men's and women's, are now rapidly approaching the standard of the Japanese and Russians. But Britain's victory over Czechoslovakia in the post-1968 Olympics match held in Great Britain may be a warning of surprises for the Americans.

The young British ladies team includes 17-year-old Barabara Aldred from Yorkshire. In spite of her age she is an experienced international, having represented Britain since Easter 1969. The eldest member of the British ladies team in 18-year-old Maureen Potts, also an experienced member of Britain's senior squad.

The match is divided into two parts. On Thursday all team-members -- six men and six women from each country -- performed their set exercises on the apparatus. On Saturday 17 the voluntary exercise will be performed at the Albert Hall, also in London.
