Background: LEADING NATIONALIST WRITER AND POLITICIAN, NGUYEN TUONG TAN, WHO COMMITTED SUICIDE LAST MONDAY IN PROTEST AGAINST "SUPPRESSION OF FREEDOM" IN SOUTH VIETNAM, WAS BURIED ON JULY 13 IN A BUDDHIST CEREMONY OUTSIDE SAIGON.

ABOUT TWO THOUSAND PERSONS INCLUDING MANY STUDENTS AND PERSONALITIES FROM CULTURAL CIRCLES ATTENDED THE FUNERAL PROCESSION FROM THE GRALL HOSPITAL TO THE XA LOI PAGODA WHERE A RELIGIOUS SERVICE WAS HELD.

LEADING THE PROCESSION WERE FOUR YOUNG MEMBERS OF TAM'S FAMILY HOLDING A FRAMED PORTRAIT OF THE LATE WRITER. THEY PRECEDED THE HEARSE ON WHICH WAS A BANNER BEARING A FOUR-LINE VERSE DEDICATED TO THE DECEASED BY A GROUP OF HIS FRIENDS AND ADMIRERS.

THE 58-YEAR-OLD WRITER COMMITTED SUICIDE BY TAKING CYANIDE LAST MONDAY NIGHT SHORTLY BEFORE HE WAS DUE TO FACE TRIAL ON CONNECTION WITH AN ABORTIVE COUP D'ETAT IN NOVEMBER 1960.

STRONG SECURITY WERE TAKEN TO PREVENT THE FUNERAL LEADING TO TROUBLE, AND THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS.

NGUYEN TUONG TAM WAS LEADER OF THE VIETNAMESE KUOMINTANG PARTY AT THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO, AND JOINED FORCES WITH THE PRO-COMMUNIST VIETMINH LED BY HO CHI MINH TO DRIVE OUT THE FRENCH FROM INDO-CHINA.

LATER THE COALITION SPLIT AND TAM, A STAUNCH ANTI-COMMUNIST, CAME TO SOUTH VIETNAM WHEN THE COUNTRY WAS PARTICIPATED IN 1954, BUT TOOK LITTLE PART IN POLITICS.

IN THE THIRTIES, HE WROTE A NUMBER OF SOCIAL AND PHILOSOPHICAL NOVELS WHICH EARNED HIM THE REPUTATION OF ONE OF VIETNAM'S FOREMOST LITERARY FIGURES.

ON A STREET IN THE CAPITAL LAST MONTH, A BUDDHIST MONK BURNED HIMSELF TO DEATH IN A DEMONSTRATION AGAINST ALLEGED RELIGIOUS DISCRIMINATIONS BY THE GOVERNMENT.
