The chief executive of South Vietnam timed his visit to coincide with the celebration of the lunar New Year. He told he troops, who were members of a South Vietnamese Marine brigade, that be realized it was difficult to be fighting in a foreign land while their loved ones were at home for the celebration of Tet.
He explained to the Marines that their Cambodian allies were week and so must be aided by South Vietnamese units. Thieu said Cambodia must not fall because the major fighting would then shift back to South Vietnam itself.
President Thieu left which a cheer from his troops and boarded his helicopter for the flight back to Saigon.
