    Background: SEOUL, SOUTH KOREA

After two years in jail, South Korea's leading dissident Kim Dae-Jung has been transferred to Seoul's National University Hospital, and may soon be allowed to go to the United States for medical treatment. A government statement published in the South Korean press on December 16 said Mr. Kim had been transferred on President Chun Doo Hwan's initiative, in a bid to consolidate national unity by eradicating ill-feeling of the past. The 57-year-old former Presidential candidate was sentenced to death by a military court in September 1980 for his alleged involvement in a civilian uprising. He was granted a reprieve by President Chun the following year, and his life sentence was further reduced to a 20-year term in March 1982. In a telephone conversation from her home, Mrs. Kim told Reuters' News Agency she appreciated the government's action. She also called for the release of other political prisoners and human rights guarantees to restore national harmony.
