Background: Zimbabwe Health Minister Dr. Herbet Ushewokunze, has held out the olive branch to nurses at Salisbury's Andrew Fleming Hospital after accusing them of blatant racial discrimination. Many white nurses threatened to resign when Dr. Ushewokunze made the charges at the hospital on Friday (12 September).
SYNOPSIS: The Andrew Fleming Hospital is the most modern in Zimbabwe, and was formerly reserved for whites only. Dr. Ushewokumnze claimed on Friday (12 September) that treatment of blacks was inferior to that given to whites. He alleged that patients were assaulted and that some nurses were not prepared to tend to African children. His comments incensed staff members, who immediately called an emergency meeting to discuss what action should be taken. The Health Minister ordered all off-duty black nurses to report for duty, in case of a massive walk-out by white staff. But on Monday (15 September) nurses of all races turned up as usual ..and it looked like the crisis was averted.
On a recent visit to another hospital, Dr. Ushewokunze was quoted as saying there were "too many knife-happy doctors who think there are too many Africans walking about on the earth.". Now, however, he's issued a statement thanking nurses at the Andrew Fleming for coming to work despite the tension of the previous few days, and congratulating them on their show of professionalism.
