Background: INTRODUCTION: The Greek electorate votes on Sunday (18 October) following a closely fought campaign between the Socialists and ruling Conservative Party. Opinion polls published recently indicate Andreas Papandreou and his Panhellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) will win 40 per cent of the popular vote while the New Democracy Party of Prime Minister George Rallis, may only collect 35 per cent. However, the polls also show that between 15 and 20 per cent of the electorate are still undecided and the final outcome may well depend on the success of the Moscow aligned Greek Communist Party.

SYNOPSIS: The largest pre-election rally ever staged in Athens' Constitution Square was held on Tuesday night (13 October) when the Communist leader, Charilaos Florakis addressed 80,000 of his supporters.

In his speech, Mr. Florakis attacked the military alliance with the United States, demanding the closing of all American bases in Greece and his country's withdrawal from NATO.

The Communist Party his hoping to win 17 per cent of the vote and thus be in a strong bargaining position if, as expected, the Socialists gain the largest number of votes but fail to win an outright majority in the new parliament.

In the past, Mr. Florakis has promised strong support for a Socialist government. But he remains critical of the way in which Mr. Papandreou has moderated his earlier demands for an end to U.S. military bases in Greece and the holding of a referendum on Greece membership of the European Economic Community (EEC).
