Background: On the occasion of the football match between Austria and Hungary in Budapest June 11, - won by Austria 2-1 "Iron Curtain" restrictions were lifted by the authorities to permit some 8,000 Austrians to travel over the border to Budapest to see the game.
This rare event naturally involved the usual formalities - there were passports to be examined and papers to be checked. But soon the long convoy of cars was on its way to the capital.
At the 'Nep-Stadion' Budapest, a wildly enthusiastic crowd of 90,000 - including First Secretary of the Hungarian Socialist Party, Janos Kadar - had gathered to watch Austria's exciting win over Hungary. In a close game, the two goals for Austria were scored by Rafreider and Nemec, and Hungary's goal was scored by Goroc.
After the match, all the way from Budapest to the border, hundreds of Hungarians lined the route to shout their congratulations and express delight at seeing their Austrian neighbours.
