Background: A Roman Catholic Priest, the Rev. Philip Berrigan, and six co-defendants including a nun, went on trial in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Monday, on conspiracy charges. The charges involve an alleged plot to kidnap Presidential Adviser Dr. Henry Kissinger.

The defendants are also accused of conspiring to destroy draft records in nine states and to blow up heating systems in Washington government buildings.

At the opening session in the court building at Harrisburg, Federal Judge R. Herman Dixon gave instructions to 144 men and women who appeared for jury selection. He warned them not to discuss the case among themselves or to take note of the considerable publicity surrounding it.

Selection of the 12 jurors to try the case is expected to take at least a week, and Judge Dixon said the case itself could last several months.
