SYNOPSIS: The Lebanese leader arrived at Latakia Airport on Wednesday (31 May) for a two-day visit to his Syrian counterpart. President Al-Assad and other Syrian dignitaries were there to welcome the Lebanese President for a third round of talks on the general situation in southern Lebanon following Israel's occupation of the territory.
After a state welcome at the airport, the visiting Lebanese President was driven to President Assad's residence for the start of the private top-level talks. This meeting was seen as a chance for an exchange of views on developments in the troubled region, with particular emphasis on Israel's withdrawal of troops. The two leaders reportedly discussed the whole southern Lebanon question in detail, and also confirmed their aim to strengthen bilateral ties between their countries.
