ONYONKA: "Let me assure you that the government and people of Kenya and proud of you. Your return is more victorious in the eyes of those who seek justice and peace in this world than when you return having won medals. (APPLAUSE) All those who have been trying to place the value of the medal above the value of human dignity. You should feel proud and walk with your heads high in the knowledge that your actions has contributed to an old black cause of fighting injustice, colonialism and racism. By your resolve to return home, no-one now doubts that Kenyans who fought and shed their blood against colonialist domination and oppression will continue to do so using all means available to them, until all the oppressed people, and especially the black person, will be free to walk anywhere in the world with dignity."

Background: Kenya's Olympic Games team arrived home on Friday (23 July), from Montreal after the boycott when most African countries withdrew their competitors. They were protesting over New Zealand's sporting links with South Africa.

SYNOPSIS: A small crowd waited at Nairobi airport to greet the plane. The team was led on to the tarmac by one of the athletes Charles Asati, who carried Kenya's flag. They were greeted by the acting Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Osago, and the Minister of Housing and Social Services. Zachariah Onyonka. Kenya's team will be sorely missed at the Olympics, as its runners and boxers are highly rated. They had been expected to win several medals.

Part of the official welcome home was a display by tribal dancers, but they outnumbered the spectators at the airport. Many of the athletes managed only wry smiles at the dancers and several had already expressed their extreme disappointment at the boycott decision. Mr. Onyonka read a government statement saying that it is not possible to separate sport and politics.
