TRANSCRIPT: U THANT: (SEQ. 3) "Regarding my attitude towards a third term, I believe I have stated my feelings on several previous occasions. I still maintain that attitude, namely that first of all no one should aspire to serve as the Secretary-General of the United Nations for more than one term. When I decided to accept the second term in 1966 I had already decided that it would be my last term. Therefore, I am sure you will not be surprised when I tell you that I have no intention whatsoever of serving beyond the present term."

TRANSCRIPT: U Thant: (SEQ. 5) "I feel that he should be the kind of man who looks to the future, a futurist, and has a global conception of problems. I do not believe in the importance of regional considerations in the choice of a Secretary-General. I do not believe that only an Asian or an African or a Latin American or a European should be the next Secretary General. What I believe in are the qualities of the head as well as of the heart, like moral integrity, competence, and his ability to project into the future, to act within the framework of a global unit, and a genuine desire to see this organisation develop into a really effective instrument for peace, justice and progress."

Background: U Thant told a Press conference in New York yesterday (Monday) that he had "no intention whatsoever" of serving beyond his present term as United Nations Secretary-General, which expires at the end of this year. He felt his successor should be a man who looks to the future.

U Thant, who will be 62 on Friday, said that in 1966, when he decided to accept a second term of office, he had already decided that it would be his last.

On the question of his successor, he said that it should be a man who looks to the future and has a global conception of problems. Regional considerations should not be a factor in the choice.
