Background: The St. Louis Cardinals won the World baseball championship Thursday (October 12) by defeating the Boston Red Sox in the seventh and final game of the Baseball World Series at Boston's Fenway Park. The score of the seventh game was 7 to 2.

Bob Gibson -- the star speed ball pitcher for the Cardinals -- allowed only three hits and one earned run. He also helped his team with a homerun over the left-centerfield fence. Gibson beat the Red Sox in two other games in the 1967 World Series. In 1964, he beat the New York Yankees in two World Series games, and has never lost a Series game.

Jim Lonborg, who pitched Boston to two victories in this World Series, looked tired in the final game. The Cardinals scored tow runs off Red Sox ace pitcher in the third inning. In the fifth, St. Louis scored twice again and in sixth inning the Cardinals got three ore runs. The Red Sox scored once in the fifth and once in the eighth.

Lou Brock, the Cardinals left fielder, broke the World Series stolen bases record by stealing seven bases in the seven games. Julien Juvier hit a three-run homerun, and Roger Maris drove in his seventh run of the series, more than any other player.

Each player of the winning team will receive about 9000 dollars. The losers will each receive 5500 dollars.
