Background: The Russian Orthodox Church solemnly celebrated the 40th.anniversary of the reinstatement of the patriarchate of the Russian Church during May.
Heads or hierarcha of all the Orthodox Churches in the world came to Moscow for the jubilee festivities. A meeting in the famous Troitse Sergieva Monastery in Zagorsk was arranged for these visitors, who walked through the streets to the monastery, wearing box hats and sporting flowing beards in a range of colours, from white to black, with several shades of brown in between.
Highlight of the jubilee celebrations was a service at the Cathedral of the Trinity, attended by the Patriarch of All Russia, Alexis, who wore a white cowl. The Alexandrian Patriarch, Christopher, in a wheelchair, and the Antiochian Patriarch Alexander the Third were present.
Later there was a meeting at the Moscow Theological Academy devoted to the jubilee festivities.
