Background: Cricket...and the Australians had taken a lead of 57 runs over Barbados at the close of the second day's play (12 March) in their four-day match at Bridgetown. The tourists had score 348 for three wickets in reply to the Barbados first innings total of 291 all out. During the first day's play a highlight of the home team's innings was a fine 96-by their opening batsman, Alvin Greenidge.
SYNOPSIS: Newcomer to test cricket, Desmond Haynes, helped Barbados make a good start with fours like this one off Clarke.
Greenidge, hooking Clarke for one, and Haynes put on 47 for the first wicket before Haynes was bowled by Laughlin for 24.
Cosier to Greenidge, who is not related to the Test player Gordon Greenidge, but is as flamboyant as his name sake.
Collis King joined Greenidge after Barbados had lost a second wicket, that of Captain Derryck Murray, for nine. King takes a four off Clarke.
King had a narrow escape when he faced Higgs.
But Geenidge remained unperturbed, as he scored a four off Higgs.
Higgs had his revenge, however, when he had Greenidge stumped by Rixon when Greenidge was four short of his century. He stayed for 202 minutes and struck 16 fours.
Skeets did not last long.....He was caught by Serjeant off Laughlin for nought.
At 171 for five, Barbados were struggling.
Higgs to Holder. Holder was out for 9, and Barbados had lost six wickets for 181.
The evening session brought a flourish from the tailenders here Beckles drives Bobby Simpson for four.
104 runs were added in 85 minutes. Clarke to Padmore, who made an unbeaten 47. Barbados were all out for 291, leaving Australia with 25 minutes to bat.
Daniel's hostility failed to impress Wood, who pulls him to the boundary.
Wood's partner, Darling, also scored freely, and the visitors had reached 30 without loss by the end of the day.
