Background: More than a hundred of UNITA's (United Party for the Total Independence of Angola) top soldiers are being put through an intensive training course at a camp 30 kilometres (20 miles)from the UNITA held city of Nova Lisboa in Central Angola. They're being trained to spearhead raids on MPLA (Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola) held positions.

The MPLA and the FNLA (National Front for the Liberation of Angola) are two rival, and up till now stronger, liberation movements fighting for the control of the country and UNITA's expecting an all out confrontation with both groups when Portugal gives independence to Angola on 11 November after more than 400 years of colonial rule.

This elite group of UNITA fighters is under the command of a tough Portuguese mercenary knows as Henrique. Henrique knows Africa and guerrilla tactics. He fought with the Portuguese Army in Mozambique for three years and specialises in search and destroy tactics. He commands the respect of his men, sometimes with force, and is one of the few whites fighting for UNITA in Angola.

UNITA now claims to have 20,000 fighting men and says it can match its two rival groups in terms of weapons and firepower.

Its High Command has signed three agreements with the MPLA and the FNLA in the past - only to see them broken by force. Now it says it will never again negotiate an alliance or a ceasefire until its struggle for supremacy is complete.
