Background: Railway workers on Friday (11 June) continued to clear the wreckage of an express train which was derailed near Salem, Illinois, killing 10 people are injuring more than a hundred. Carrying nearly 200 passengers, the "City of New Orleans" left the rails as it sped at more than 90 miles (140 km) an hour on its run from Chicago to New Orleans on Thursday night.

All fourteen carriages and the four diesel locomotives ploughed off the line, strewing wreckage over a mile (1.6 km) of torn-up tracks. Many of the dead and injured were trapped beneath the wreckage.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the derailment might have been caused by locked wheels on the leading locomotive.
