Background: On the 93rd anniversary of his birth, a monument was unveiled to the late Field Marshall Mannerheim in Helsinki. The occasion was also the Flag Day of the Finnish defence forces, and a memorial festival was held in honour of the great Finnish soldier-statesman.
After a speech to the crowds, followed by the unveiling ceremony, Finland's President Kekkonen took the salute as troops paraded with flags.
Carl Gustav Emil Mannerheim, born 1867, became a field marshal in the Finnish army in 1933. He became known throughout the world in 1939-40, when he led his country against invading Russian forces during the winter war. Later, he was to be President of Finland from 1944-46. He died in 1951.
