Background: Prince Rainier, ruler of the tiny principality of Monaco, and his wife, Princess Grace, were filmed June 18 by Visnews at the Vatican, receiving an audience with Pope John XXIII - their second papal blessing in two years. Before meeting the Pontiff, Prince Rainier inspected the Vatican guard of honour.
Hundreds of tourists watched the couple - on a five-day official visit to Rome - arrive. During the audience in the Throne Hall, the Pope presented the Royal guests with an autographed photograph of himself in a silver frame. He gave Princess Grace a mosaic reproduction of the Madonna of the Graces, and gifts for the Rainier's two children - a mosaic of the Madonna of Perpetual Succour for Princess Caroline, and a gold medal and chain for Prince Albert. He praised the couple for the good example they have given by their home life.
After the audience the visitors prayed before the Basilica tomb of the Prince of the Apostle and the late Pope Pius XII.
Prince Rainier recently stated that he intended to rule Monaco without benefit of Parliament for at least another two years.
