Background: General Juan Peron, the Argentine strongman, has come out with a new condemnation of extremism and violence this week. Visiting the headquarters of the General Labour Confederation (CGT) in Buenos Aires on Monday (July 30), General Peron declared that there is not room in his Justicialist Movement for leftwing extremists.

During an impromptu speech, the 77-year-old leader criticised "those who feel revolutionary and want to fight for no purpose." The movement, he said, did not need violence.

The Justicialist youth movement mobilised thousands of supporters to greet the General on his return from exile last month, and their mass rally ended in a bloody shooting incident -- apparently between rival Peronist factions.

SYNOPSIS: The day after the General's speech, Argentine President Raul Lastiri announced a crackdown on urban guerrilla aimed at preventing the current wave of kidnapping. This, and the General's statement, was interpreted as the latest movement towards the right in government policy, signifying that General Peron was to silence leftwingers who squate Peron??? with socialism.
