(MRS. WALLACE:) "Well, my daughter, who's eight, was very good. She's pretty good to amuse. This one was kind of hard to....he was pretty had to amuse and I was just afraid - we don't know about this man - end I was just afraid that he would upset the man who as standing in the back with a gun the whole time. And i didn't know - I tried to keep him calm and quiet all the time - but I just didn't know what would set him off; and I didn't know if he screamed if something wold set him off so we tried to amuse him with every way we could think off.... ice, pencils, pens, just everything." SOF (2) BEGINS: (REPORTER) "Describe what happened around you because you were right in the centre of where most of the people were shot. Could you, again?"
(DR. ALVAREZ) "Yes, I was in the one third of the back compartment of the airplane. A man across (from me and one seat ahead was the one that stood up...or, started to stand up and his wife tried to pull him down and, or, he slumped down in his seat and she called out: 'He's been shot'. You could see the blood running on his shirt and of course the person up ahead right away folded the seat over and they stretched him out and you could seethe blood just running over his shirt. But apparently two other people got shot but I didn't see the other two." ENDS.

Background: A mother who worried about how to keep her children quiet....a doctor who was in the centre of a shooting....these are two stories which came out of Wednesday's (5 July) attempted hijacking of a Pacific Southwest Airliner in California. The two hijackers and a Canadian passenger were shot dead in a gun battle involving FBI agents who stormed the airliner at San Francisco airport, after it was hijacked between Sacramento and Burbank. Two other passengers were wounded. This NBC coverage features interviews with the mother and doctor.
SYNOPSIS: This airliner had just taken off from Sacramento,California, when it was seized by two hijackers.
The men, identified as Bulgarian immigrants, demanded ransom money, parachutes and a flight to Siberia, so the 'plane landed at San Francisco International airport to pick up the money and refuel.
F-B-I agents stormed the jet killing both hijackers but not before one of them had fired wildly into the passengers, killing one and wounding two others.
Later, in the airport terminal, some of the passengers were interviewed about their six-hour ordeal.
