Background: The launching of the world's largest oil-tanker, the "Universe Apollo" was filmed on Dec 6 by Visnews in the Japanese port of Kure. The 104,500 ton giant will sail under the Liberian "flag of convenience" for the National Bulk Carriers, Inc. of New York.
The Universe Apollo was completed in the record time of five months at a cost of GBP4,629,629. She will be fully fitted out in January 1959 and traffic the Persian Gulf and South Africa. 945 feet 9 inches long, 135 feet wide, she has a depth of 67 1/2 feet. (The world's largest passenger ship, the Queen Elisabeth, 83,673 ton is 1,031 feet long). The tanker's loading capacity is 103,000 tons of oil and her four pumps, can fill or empty her in fifteen hours. The single, five-blade 24.5 feet diameter propeller driven by a 25,000 Horse Power turbine, gives the ship a top speed of 15 knots. Faster than most warships. Carrying 15,000 tons of fuel for her own consumption the Universe Apollo can stay three and a half months at sea.
Mr. E.L. Hansen, head of the N.B.C. Kure Dockyard, made a speech and while hundreds of Japanese schoolchildren waved American and Japanese flags, Mrs. Daniel Ludwig, wife of N.B.C.s owner, christened the ship. Some 2,700 dockyard workers cheered as the ship was slowly towed out of the floating dock.
The Kure Dockyards, were leased to the N.B.C. by the Japanese Government in 1951. The Universe Apollo was the third large tanker to be launched since Daniel Ludwig, obtained the lease while searching for sites to build supertankers at low cost. Work on another 100,000 ton tanker is expected to start in September 1961.
Gigantic vessels like the Universe Apollo have long been contemplated by oil companies as one way of assuring continuous flow of oil to the west since the nationalization of the Suez Canal. The Universe Apollo can only sail through the Suez Canal in ballast. Fully loaded she has to use the Cape Route.
