Background: Tennis - and Sweden's Bjorn Borg moved into the third round of the French Men's Open Tennis Championship in Paris, on Wednesday (30 May) when he defeated Tom Gullikson of the United States, 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-4. It was a tough match for Borg, who later denied that a persistent groin injury was still troubling him, but confessed to being tired and out of condition on the centre court of the Stade Roland Grasse.
SYNOPSIS: Borg, in the far court leading five games to four in the fourth set, serves to Tom Gullikson, the left-handed of the American tennis twins.
After a long rally, gullikson puts the ball out of court, and Borg leads 30-15.
Throughout the match Borg appeared out of form though this backhand cross court passing shot gave him two match points.
There was little doubt who the 18,000 crowd were supporting. Their hissing clearly unsettled the young American.
Borg, who has been seeded to meet Jimmy Connors in the final - if they both survive the previous rounds - recently took a ten-day break from tennis because of injury. His movement around the court showed he was not completely fit.
Gullikson moving in on a typical Borg fore-hand managed to save one match point, and make it 40-30.
But his fight back was short-lived. And he was soon forced into an error which gave Borg the match and passage into the third round.
