Background: Italian President Giovanni Leone consulted two of his predecessors on Sunday for advice on ways to solve the country's current constitutional crisis.
President Leone met ex-Presidents Giovanni Gronghi and Gui???ppe Saragat and also the President of the Chamber, Signor Alessandro Pertini on Sunday (6 October).
The President was trying to find a solution to the crisis which began the Thursday before (3 October) with the collapse of the centre-left coalition led by Signor Mariano Rumor.
The collapse was brought about by the Fiance Minister and leader of the Social Democrats, Signor Tanassi, who said his Party would no longer associate with the Socialists.
Top-level talks to solve the crisis continued on Monday (7 October). And, late that night, it appeared that a new centre-left coalition might emerge.
The man tipped to lead such a coalition was Signor Amintore Fanfani, the Secretary of the Christian Democrat Party. He had been against taking on the Premiership because it meant giving up his position in the Party....but many influential Christian Democrats wanted Signor Fanfani to lead a Government without giving up his Party post.
