INTRODUCTION: Primary school teachers in Bangladesh are continuing their hunger strike to try to force the government of Judge Abdus Sattar to meet their demands.Last February, thousands of primary school teachers took to the street in an action based on similar demands.

SYNOPSIS: The school teachers have begun a hunger strike against the Bangladesh government's not coming through with pay increase. The rises were agreed some time ago.

The teachers were also demanding to be made government employees. They are asking for the release of some of their leaders who have been jailed on corruption charges.Among these is the president of the Bangladesh Primary Teachers Association, Mr.Abul Kalanazad.

The strikers had gathered at the Language Movement Mausoleum in Dacca. The hunger strike is indefinite, and many of the teachers quickly became very weak.At least ten have been to hospital.

More than 300 teachers have been taking part in the strike.A pro-government faction within the associations has opposed the strikers. The recently-elected government appears to be unmoved by the action.

The teachers claim they have started their hunger strike because all other methods of negotiation had failed. They hoped the strike would attract enough publicity to their cause to persuade the government to meet their demands.
