    Prime Minister Yassuhiro Nakasone activated a remote controlled detonator on January 27th to blast away the final section in the 54km tunnel linking the main island of Honshu to the north. It is now the world's largest tunnel and has been built at a cost of 2.2 billion dollars. The project was started in 1971 and will cut rail travelling time from Tokyo to Sapporo, capital of Hokkaido to under 15 hours from 22 hours by train and ferry.
