Background: Rumania's Ilie Nastase, now the Wimbledon No. 1 seed because of the boycott by the Association of Tennis Professionals, got a rapturous welcome from the crowd when he walked onto the centre court for the start of this year's championships on Monday (25 June)
Nastase repaid the applause by a masterly performance in which he beat 29-year-old West German Hans-Jeachim Plotz 6-3; 7-5; 6-2.

Nastase, who'd been playing before a capacity crowd, said afterwards that his reception had been marvellous -- "as if I was winning Wimbledon." He refused to comment on the boycott.

This has thrown the spotlight onto younger players, especially 17-year-old Swede Bjern Berg who's new seeded number six. Berg, who's only been playing tennis for eight years, began with a first round match against 32-year-old Indian Premjit Lall.

Although Lall's experience showed some faults in Berg's game, it wasn't enough to match his power. Berg won 6-3; 6-4 and 9-8.

SYNOPSIS: Wimbledon had a bright sunny day for the start of this year's championships -- and raptures applause greeted Number One seed Ilie Nastase as he walked onto the court.

Nastase was playing Hans-Jeachim Pletz of West Germany, serving. The Rumanian became Number On seed because of the boycott by the Association of Tennis Professionals; a boycott he refused to comment upon.

Now the second set and Nastase, continues to assert his superiority.

The third set and Nastase serves. He'd already won the first two sate Six-Three; Seven-Five. And he delighted the spectators by making it a win in straight sets. Plot serves but he ended up losing the final set Six-Two.

But the name players didn't get all the attention. The boycott has thrown the spotlight on younger players, especially seventeen-years-old Bjorn Borg of Sweden.

Here he takes the serve from thirty-two year old Indian Premjit Lall. Berg's inexperience was exploited by his opponent but his power pulled him through.

The third set and Borg is new leading Six-Three; Six-Four. He continued to demonstrate his power - he reached the French Championship semi finals last month -- and eventually won.

Lall serves for the last time -- and ends by losing the fin set Nine-Eight.
