TRANSCRIPT: (SEQ. 2): ROGERS: "In Cairo we had a very specific discussion with the Government of Egypt and we think there has been some narrowing of the gap. I should say that there are considerable areas of disagreement or differences that remain. But in view of the discussions we've had here I've asked Mr. Sisco to return to Cairo to provide the Egyptian officials with certain clarifications that we were able to find here. Thank you very much."

    (ROME)

(SEQ. 9): ROGERS: "Some of the results of the trip as we see them...obviously results do not occur immediately and we have no sure way of knowing the effects of the visit. I can say that there are one or two things that stand out in my recollection of this visit. The first is the strong desire for peace on the part of everyone we talked to, and particularly the people in the area, the average citizen that we talked to has an immensely strong desire for peace. As I travelled through the Arab countries and Israel we were greeted constantly by signs of encouragement, hopeful that somehow a peaceful settlement could be worked out."

On his arrival later in Rome, Mr. Rogers said he had found an immensely strong desire for peace among the peoples of the region, and for the present absence of fighting to continue. He's to spend only one day in Rome, but will have talks with Italian Foreign Minister, Signor Aldo Moro, and President Giuseppe Saragat.
