Background: The Congo has a new president - Colonel Denis Sassou-Nguesso, who has been the Army Chief of Staff, The country's only political party -- the Congolese Workers Party -- elected the new leader at its emergency congress, which ended in Brazzaville in Saturday (31 March). An official communique from the party's central committee also said that former head of state Joachim Yho bi-Opango would be tried for treason.
SYNOPSIS: The emergency congress was held in the town hall, several weeks after the central committee removed General thombi-Opango. Here is his successor, Colonel Sassou-Nguesso, who had been acting president since the head of state was ousted.
Diplomatic sources said the new president had vowed to purge the party of what he called dissidents, opportunists and irresponsible elements. He had already considered sacking a dozen or more members of the central committee. Foreign diplomats were at the congress, where they heard Colonel Sassou-Nguesso give his first speech as the confirmed leader.
He called for an investigation into the murder two years ago of his close friend, the late President Marien Ngoubi. The congress ordered that General Yhombi-Opango be prosecuted for high treason, and that all his property should be seized. The central committee accuses him of 'right-wing deviation', in particular, buying a bed with built-in massage system for an estimated eighty thousand dollars.
