Background: Israeli Prime Minister Mrs. Golda Meir arrived in London on Tuesday (3 November) for a three-day visit to Britain which will include talks with British leaders. Security at Heathrow Airport was strict as the Israeli airliner arrived from Ottawa.
Mrs Meir will have talks on Wednesday (4 November) with Prime Minister Edward Heath and Sir Alec Douglas-Home, the Foreign Secretary, whose speech last week on the Middle East has brought angry response from Israeli leaders. The speech recommended Israeli withdrawal from nearly all territories occupied in the Six-Day War of 1967.
The speech, to a Conservative Party meeting, was interpreted in some quarters as amounting to a new Middle East peace plan. British Foreign Office sources denied on Monday (2 November), however, that there was any new plan or initiative.
During Mrs. Meir's visit, Mr. Heath and Sir Alec are expected to reassure her that Britain has not given an anti-Israeli twist to her Middle East policy.
