Background: Pakistan and Jordan have signed an agreement covering the exchange of labour and technical know-how.

SYNOPSIS: The agreement was initialled during the second meeting of the Jordan-Pakistan Permanent Joint Commission for Economic and Technical Co-operation. Leading the Jordanian delegations was Labour Minister Issam Al-Ajilouni, at the left. The Pakistan group was led by their Labour Minister, Mr F.K. Bandial. Economic development in Jordan was severely handicapped by the 1948 and 1967 wars with Israel, and by the civil war of 1970. However, foreign trade picked up well after 1967, and it has increased its exports, the main items being phosphates, tomatoes, and other vegetables and fruit.

In its current Five-Year Plan, running from 1976 to 1980, the Jordanian government is boosting the producing areas of the economy above the previously over-emphasised services sector. Much of the spending in this plan has been on transport, housing and government buildings, mining and industry, all areas which have developed expertise that would be covered by this latest agreement.
