Background: The centre of Houston, Texas was invaded by swarms of grasshoppers on November 7. Thousands of the insects crawled walls, windows and pavements, sending shoppers and office workers running. Restaurants reported a drop in their normally active lunchtime business; it seemed diners were put off their food by the sight of grasshoppers peering through the windows at them. One public-spirited municipal worker tried sweeping up the insects, but instead caused still greater havoc when the grasshoppers jumped away from his broom, setting off a panic among bystanders.

Agricultural experts believe the warm sun reflecting off windscreens in the city centre attracted the insects as they searched for places to lay their eggs. The grasshoppers were expected to stay in Houston for four or five days and hardware store owners were looking forward to a boom in sales of insect spray.
