Background: THE TOUGHEST SERIES OF AMERICA'S CUP MATCHES SINCE 1934 ENDED YESTERDAY WHEN THE AMERICAN YACHT WEATHERLY WON ITS FOURTH AND FINAL MATCH AGAINST THE GRETEL. THE GRETEL DISTINGUISHED ITSELF IN THE COMPETITION, WINNING THE SECOND RACE OF THE SERIES AND SNAPPING A 13-VICTORY STRING BY DEFENDING YACHTS. ENDEAVOUR IN 1934 WAS THE LAST CHALLENGER TO WIN A RACE. GRETEL THREW ANOTHER SCARE INTO THE DEFENDERS OF THE CUP SATURDAY WHEN SHE CHASED WEATHERLY HOME IN THE CLOSEST RACE IN CUP HISTORY, JUST 26 SECONDS OFF THE WINNING PACE.

TUESDAY'S FINAL MEETING WAS ANOTHER STORY. THE AUSTRALIAN BOAT WAS A QUARTER-MILE OFF THE PACE ONCE THE OPENING LEG WAS COMPLETED. FROM THEN ON, THE WEATHERLY PROCEEDED TO OPEN UP ITS ADVANTAGE, FINISHING A HALF MILE AHEAD OF GRETEL. WEATHERLY WAS THE FASTER BOAT ON EACH OF THE FOUR LEGS OF THE COURSE, BUT HER MARGIN ON THE DOWN WIND SIDE THAT COMPLETED THE RACE WAS SLIGHT...ONLY ONE SECOND. ONLY IN THAT FINAL RUN WAS JOCK STURROCK, THE GRETEL SKIPPER, ABLE TO LIMIT HIS ADVERSARY. BUT HE COULD NOT OVERTAKE WEATHERLY.

THE AMERICAN SKIPPER WAS SO WARY OF COSTLY MISTAKES THAT HE DECLINED STURROCK'S CHALLENGES TO SHORT-TACKING DUELS. MOSSACHER HAD BEEN BURNED ONCE IN SUCH A DUEL WITH STURROCK AND WAS NOT RISKING A REPETITION.
