• Short Summary

JOMO KENYATTA, PRESIDENT OF THE KENYA AFRICAN NATIONAL UNION AND CONVICTED MAU HAU ORGANISER, FLEW INTO LONDON, UK, Nov 6, FROM NAIROBI.

  • Description

INTERVIEWER: "IT HAS BEEN SAID THAT, BY YOUR BECOMING PRESIDENT OF KANU, YOU WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO UNIFY KENYA SO WELL. DO YOU FEEL THAT THAT IS REASONABLE OR NOT?

KENYATTA: "I DON'T THINK THAT IT IS RIGHT, BECAUSE I LEAD, I THINK, THE MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE; AND I DO NOT SPEAK AS A SECTIONAL LEADER, I SPEAK AS NATIONAL LEADER OF MY PEOPLE".

INTERVIEWER: "SURELY, THE NATIONAL UNION IS LARGELY DOMINATED BY KIKUYU?"

    KENYATTA: "THAT IS NONSENSE, NO."

INTERVIEWER: "THAT IS THE THOUGHT HERE"

KENYATTA: "THAT IS THE WRONG IMPRESSION, BECAUSE IF YOU COUNT ALL THOSE TRIBES WHICH I HAVE TOLD YOU, I THINK THAT OUT OF SEVEN MILLION IN KENYA, I THINK THE UNION PER CENT WOULD NOT BE WRONG TO SAY SIX MILLION."

INTERVIEWER: "IS THE GAP BETWEEN YOUR PARTY AND THE DEMOCRATIC UNION NOW IRRECONCILABLE, DO YOU THINK".

KENYATTA: "IT IS RECONCILABLE, BECAUSE ALL IT IS THAT A FEW PEOPLE WHO ARE AT THE HEAD OF THE DEMOCRATIC UNION ARE AFRAID TO LOSE THEIR POSITION. IT THINK VERY MUCH THAT WE WILL HAVE A NATIONAL UNION, THAT IS WHY THE TALK ABOUT THIS TRIBALISM, THIS REGIONALISM IS SO BAD. IT IS JUST TO SAVE THEIR POSITIONS. THERE IS NOTHING AT ALL ABOUT TRIBALISM."

INTERVIEWER: "THANK YOU VERY MUCH, SIR."
