Background: AN IMAGINATIVE ROAD-SEA-RAIL INK, THE DREAM OF GERMAN AND DANISH ENGINEERS FOR A HUNDRED YEARS, WAS FORMALLY INAUGURATED YESTERDAY (TUESDAY). PRESIDENT LUEBKE WITH MANY OTHER DISTINGUISHED GUESTS, FIRST EMBARKED IN BRILLIANT SUNSHINE ON THE FERRY-BOAT "THEODOR HEUSS" TO MEET KING FREDERIK AT THE DANISH PORT OF RODBY.

AFTER WARMLY WELCOMING HIS GUEST TO DENMARK. KING FREDERIK LED BY THE PARTY ABROAD THE DANISH FERRY BOAT "KONG FREDERIK", WHICH SET SAIL FOR GERMANY. THE NEW ROUTE WAS INAUGURATED BY CUTTING A RIBBON STRETCHED ACROSS THE MOUTH OF RODBY HARBOUR.

TRAVELLING TIME BETWEEN SCANDINAVIA AND THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC WILL BE CONSIDERABLY SHORTENED BY THE NEW ROUTE. SEVERAL NEW BRIDGES - ONE A 1,000 YARDS (914 METERS) LONG - HAD TO BE SPECIALLY BUILT ACROSS THE INLAND WATERWAY LINKING GERMANY AND DENMARK. AS WELL AS THE BRIDGES, NEW HARBOUR INSTILLATION ROAD AND RAILWAY APPROACHES HAD TO BE CONSTRUCTED. THE WHOLE PROJECT HAS COST ALMOST ?30 MILLION
IT IS EXPECTED THAT OVER 80,000 CARS WILL BE USING THE ROAD - CALLED THE BEE-LINE - EACH MONTH. THIS FIGURE WILL DOUBLE THE TRAFFIC USING THE OLD ROUTE. IN ADDITION, 12 EXPRESS TRAINS WILL USE THE FERRY EACH DAY, AGAIN A CONSIDERABLE INCREASE IN NUMBERS OVER THE OLD CONNECTIONS.
