Background: The United States Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Robinson McIlvaine, presented a multi-milion-dollar equipment package to the National Youth Service in Nairobi on Wednesday (November 24). The equipment, which includes road-building vehicles and other heavy machinery, was purchased by the Kenyan Government with a three-and-a-half-million dollar loan from the U.S. Government.

SYNOPSIS: Nairobi, Kenya, -- and the Minister of Labour, Mr. E.N. Mwendwa; the U.S. Ambassador to Kenya, Mr. Robinson McIlvaine; and the head of the Kenyan National Youth Service, Mr. Geoffrey Griffin, at a presentation ceremony on Wednesday involving over three million dollars' worth of equipment.

Mr. McIlvaine was presenting the equipment -- which included road-building vehicles and other heavy machinery -- to the National Youth Service. It had been purchased for the Service by the Kenyan Government with a three-and-a-half-million dollar loan from the U.S. Government. Among the machinery were tractors, buses, trucks and generators, and a model of one of the road-building vehicles was presented to Mr. Mwendwa by Mr. McIlvaine.

After the presentation the party went outside to inspect some of the machinery which had already been purchased.

The U.S. Government, through their AID organisation, has been helping the Kenyan National Youth Service since 1964, and has supplied nearly ten million dollars worth of aid. In addition, the American Peace Corps is involved with the National Youth Service in training and administrative programme.
